Postman Review (2026): Still the Essential API Testing Tool?

We built and tested a REST API with Postman for two weeks. It’s still the default — but rivals are catching up.
What Postman Does
An API client and development environment for sending requests, organizing collections, writing tests, and mocking servers.
The Good
- Intuitive interface. Anyone can send a request in minutes.
- Collections & environments make complex workflows manageable.
- Automated test scripts (pre-request and tests) are powerful.
- Team collaboration and API documentation generation.
The Bad
- Getting bloated. Every feature gets a tab; the free tier reeks of upsells.
- Keep it local on the desktop app to avoid cloud sharing of sensitive endpoints.
- Lighter alternatives exist for simple needs.
Alternatives
Insomnia (clean, free, open-source leaning), Bruno (fast, git-friendly, local-first), and VS Code’s built-in REST client.
Final Verdict
8/10 — Still great for most API work. If you value a clutter-free, local-first tool, try Bruno or Insomnia first. But Postman’s power and ubiquity are hard to beat for teams.
