Supabase Review (2026): The Open-Source Firebase Killer, Matured at Last?

We built an app backend with Supabase to test whether it truly replaces Firebase.
What Supabase Is
An open-source Firebase alternative built on Postgres — database, auth, storage, edge functions, and realtime, all in one platform.
The Good
- Real Postgres, not locked-in. Standard SQL, relations, and full power.
- Generous free tier. Two projects, good quotas.
- Great DX. Auto-generated APIs, realtime subscriptions, and an excellent dashboard.
- Self-hostable if you outgrow the cloud.
The Bad
- Scaling can get pricey on cloud at high volume.
- AWS dependencies under the hood on cloud plan.
- Occasional breaking changes across major versions.
- Realtime is solid but not the friendliest to tune.
Supabase vs Firebase
Supabase favors SQL/Postgres, open source, more portable. Firebase favors NoSQL, deeper one-click integrations, mature at Google scale. If you like relational data, Supabase wins.
Final Verdict
8.5/10 — Excellent open-source backend. For relational apps it beats Firebase on flexibility and portability. Free tier is real. Highly recommended.
