Docker Desktop Review (2026): Containers for Everyone, or a Developer Crutch?

We spun up dev environments with Docker Desktop for a month. Here’s how it fares for solo devs and teams.
What Docker Desktop Is
A desktop application wrapping Docker Engine — containers, images, volumes, and Compose — behind a friendly UI.
The Good
- “It works on my machine” ends. Consistent environments across the team.
- Great DX. Docker Compose defines your whole stack in YAML.
- Huge ecosystem of ready-made images.
- Easy rollback and cleanup vs manual installs.
The Bad
- Resource hog. Running containers + a VM (on Mac/Windows) eats RAM.
- Licensing. Free for small businesses / individuals, paid for large companies — people get surprised.
- Learning curve for the Docker concepts, not just the UI.
- Some networking quirks between containers.
Alternatives
Podman (daemonless, rootless, open), Rancher Desktop, and plain WSL2 + CLI.
Final Verdict
8/10 — The easiest way into containers. Free for individuals and small teams. Watch the licensing if you’re at a large company. Power users may prefer Podman.
