WordPress vs Wix (2026): Which Should You Build Your Website On?

We rebuilt the same demo business site on both WordPress and Wix to compare setup, cost, SEO, and control.
The Big Difference
WordPress is an open-source CMS you self-host — total control, but you manage hosting, updates, and security. Wix is a hosted website builder — easy, but locked into its platform.
Round 1: Ease of Use
Wix wins. Drag-and-drop creation, instant publishing, no hosting worries. WordPress has a steeper initial learning curve but is not hard for basics.
Round 2: Cost
WordPress wins long-term. Hosting can be a few dollars a month; you own everything. Wix’s premium tiers add up and keep rising.
Round 3: Flexibility & SEO
WordPress wins decisively. Full control over themes, plugins, SEO plugins, code, and hosting infrastructure. Wix has decent built-in SEO but far less control.
Round 4: Maintenance
Wix is hands-off. WordPress needs updates and backups managed (or via managed hosting).
Final Verdict
Beginners or hobby sites: Wix. Serious businesses, blogs, SEO-driven sites, or builders wanting control and low long-term cost: WordPress. For most people who value ownership and SEO: WordPress is the honest pick.
