Windows Defender Review (2026): Is Microsoft’s Built-in Security Actually Enough?

The free security that ships with Windows keeps winning lab tests. We pushed it hard to see if you still need a paid antivirus.
The Baseline
Windows Defender (now Microsoft Defender) is a full antivirus built into Windows 10/11. For years it was considered a joke; that’s no longer true.
The Good
- Top-tier detection. Consistently ranks near the top of AV-Comparatives and AV-Test.
- Free, built in, always updated. Zero install friction.
- Light on resources compared to third-party suites.
- Good integration with Windows Firewall and security center.
The Bad
- No extras. No password vault, VPN, or cleanup tools (unlike paid suites).
- Ransomware protection defaults need tightening (enable protected folders).
- Phishing-blocking in browser is decent but not best-in-class.
Do You Need a Third-Party AV?
For most home users: no. Defender + Windows Firewall + common sense (don’t open sketchy attachments) is enough. Add a browser ad-blocker and keep everything updated.
Who Should Still Buy AV
Enterprise environments, users handling sensitive data, and people who click on everything. For them a paid suite adds defense-in-depth.
Final Verdict
8.5/10 — The smart default. Built-in, free, and genuinely strong now. Most people can drop their paid AV and lose nothing.
